Best San Diego Matchmakers for Singles Over 50

Couple holding hands at sunset by the ocean

10 minute read. By Sophy Singer, founder of Sophy Love.

You’re over 50. You’ve built a life that works: a career you’re proud of, friendships that hold, maybe grown children and a home that finally feels like yours. You’re successful in most of life, and dating feels like the one thing you can’t solve.

I hear this all the time. Some people come to me after a divorce. Some after the loss of a partner. Some after decades of putting everyone else first. Many have tried the apps, and the apps feel like another inbox: more messages to answer, more profiles that don’t sound like real people, more evenings spent on conversations that never become a date.

If you’re in San Diego and thinking about a matchmaker, you’ve probably noticed there isn’t just one kind. This guide walks through the four types of matchmakers, who each one is best for, and what to ask before you sign. I’ll also tell you where my firm, Sophy Love, fits, and when another type might serve you better.

What a Matchmaker Does That an App Doesn’t

An app gives you access. A matchmaker gives you someone in your corner.

On an app, you do all of the work: you search, sort, message, and try to figure out who is real and who is serious. A good matchmaker takes those exhausting parts off your plate. They listen to what you actually want, search on your behalf, screen people before you meet, and give you honest feedback along the way. Some also offer coaching, which helps you notice what you bring into the room.

What’s Different About Dating After 50

Dating after 50 isn’t harder or easier than dating at 30. It’s different.

  • You know yourself better. You know your values, your deal breakers, and what a good day looks like. That clarity is an asset.
  • Your life is full. You’re looking for someone to share a life with, not someone to build one around.
  • You may be dating for the first time in decades. The landscape can feel unfamiliar. That’s normal.
  • Your history comes with you. Divorce or loss can still shape how you date. It deserves care, not a pep talk.
  • The apps weren’t built with you in mind. In a 2022 Pew Research Center survey, 17% of Americans 50 and older had ever used a dating site or app, and 6% of partnered adults over 50 met their partner online.

So if the apps have never felt like your place, you’re in good company. There are other ways to meet people, and a matchmaker is one of them.

The Four Types of Matchmakers

1

Local or Niche Matchmakers

What it is: A matchmaker who focuses on one city or one community. Many are faith-based, working only with Jewish singles or only with Christian singles, for example.

How it works: The matchmaker draws on deep roots in that place or community. Shared background and values are part of the starting point.

Best for: Singles whose search is defined by place or community, especially when shared faith is essential.

Examples: Fass Pass to Love, which works only with Jewish singles, and Traci Porterfield’s Love By Design, a matchmaker local to San Diego.

2

Large National Networks

What it is: A matchmaking company with a large network of singles across many cities.

How it works: The firm draws on its existing network and focuses on making introductions. For many people, it’s a real step up from the apps and an accessible way to try matchmaking for the first time.

Best for: Singles who want a matchmaker’s help with introductions and a more accessible entry point.

Examples: Tawkify and Three Day Rule.

Good questions to ask: Ask whether every match is interviewed before you meet. Ask who your point of contact will be, and how your feedback after each date shapes the next introduction.

3

Boutique and Executive Search Firms

What it is: A small firm that runs a dedicated search for each client, much like an executive recruiter searching for a key hire.

How it works: These firms don’t stop at their own network. They recruit for each client, interview candidates, and stay hands-on through every introduction. They take a limited number of clients at a time so the work stays personal.

Best for: Singles who want a search built around them, a matchmaker who knows them well, and support from the first conversation through every date.

Examples: Selective Search, based in Chicago and founded by a former executive recruiter. Sophy Love, headquartered in San Diego, is also in this group. I’ll explain what sets us apart below.

4

Luxury and Celebrity Matchmakers

What it is: Matchmakers at the very top of the market, often with well-known names.

How it works: These firms bring long track records and wide connections built over many years. Their engagements are personal and bespoke, and priced to match.

Best for: Singles who want the most bespoke, highly personal experience available.

Examples: Patti Stanger’s Millionaire’s Club, Kelleher International, and Maclynn International (London and New York).

Sophy Love also works at this level: private searches led personally by Sophy, with the same down-to-earth, coaching-led approach and even more of the search shaped around you.

A Note on Senior Dating Apps

Apps like OurTime and SilverSingles are built for people over 50. They’re affordable, but you do the searching, screening and messaging yourself. They aren’t matchmakers, though some people use them alongside one.

How to Choose a Matchmaker in San Diego

Here are the six criteria I’d use if I were choosing for myself.

  1. Who does the searching. Does the matchmaker only look within their own network, or do they recruit for you? Will anyone work the dating apps on your behalf?
  2. How candidates are interviewed and screened. Ask what happens before you meet someone. Is every match interviewed? What screening is done?
  3. Experience with clients over 50. Dating after a long marriage or a loss has its own rhythm. Ask how often the matchmaker works with people in your stage of life.
  4. You approve every introduction. You should never have to meet someone you haven’t agreed to meet.
  5. Coaching is available. Good coaching can change how you date, not just who you meet. It should be offered, not forced on you.
  6. Honesty about outcomes. A good matchmaker talks about results plainly and never promises love on a schedule.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

  • Who will be my matchmaker, and will that person stay with me through the whole search?
  • Do you search beyond your own network? How?
  • Is every match interviewed and screened before an introduction?
  • How many of your clients are in my age range?
  • Do I approve each introduction before it happens?
  • Is coaching available? Is it required?
  • Can you put the price, scope and terms in writing?
  • How do you describe your results, and what do those numbers include?

Red Flags

  • A guarantee of love by a date. No one can promise you’ll be in a relationship by a certain month.
  • “Only one spot left.” Pressure to sign today is about the sale, not about you.
  • No price in writing. A professional firm will put the scope and price on paper before you commit.
  • Making you feel like the problem. You aren’t too old, too picky or too much. Anyone who makes you feel that way isn’t the right partner for your search.

Where Sophy Love Fits

Sophy Love is a boutique luxury matchmaking firm headquartered in San Diego, where I live. Many of our clients are 50 and older. We’re in the boutique and executive search group above, and we also work at the luxury level. Here is what sets us apart.

Every search is run with care. Our matchmakers are experienced, trained in a shared process and backed by clear systems, so your search is handled the same careful way from the first conversation to the last introduction. I review matches with our team before they’re presented. Our team screens potential matches before any introduction, and you approve every introduction.

Coaching is at the heart of what we do. We use coaching more than most matchmakers, and clients tell us it’s what made the difference for them. It’s offered, never required. When clients choose it, our coaching draws on attachment theory, a way of understanding the patterns you bring into relationships. For many people over 50, especially after a divorce or a loss, that understanding can help the next relationship feel different.

Everything is in-house. We offer Executive Matchmaking, digital dating, coaching, or a search that combines them, all run by our own team. You choose the mix, and because nothing is handed off, every part of your search is held to the same standard. We recruit for each client, can work the dating apps on your behalf, and also draw on a network of 400+ partner matchmakers.

Sophy Love has been helping singles navigate dating and relationships for six years, and I bring more than 15 years of matchmaking experience. We’ve worked with 286 clients and generated more than 5,600 matches. 86% of Sophy Love clients are in a relationship within 18 months of starting with us, whether through someone we introduced or someone they met independently during or after working with us. That’s a historical result, not a guarantee. You can read what clients say in their own words on our testimonials page, and learn more about matchmaking in San Diego.

We aren’t the right fit for everyone. If your search is defined by one faith community, a niche matchmaker may serve you better. If you want the most accessible way to try matchmaking, a national network is a good start. I’d rather you choose the type that fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

For many singles over 50, yes, especially if you’re tired of doing all the searching yourself or you’re dating again after a divorce or loss. A matchmaker searches on your behalf, screens people before you meet, and gives you honest feedback. Whether it’s worth it depends on the type of matchmaker and whether the approach fits how you want to date.

Senior dating apps like OurTime and SilverSingles give you access to a pool of singles over 50, and you do the searching, screening and messaging yourself. They’re affordable. A matchmaker does that work for you: they search for you, screen candidates, arrange introductions you approve, and support you after each date.

Costs vary by the type of matchmaker. Senior dating apps cost the least, large national networks are the most accessible matchmaking option, and boutique, executive search and luxury firms cost more because the search is built around each client. Always ask for the price, the scope and the terms in writing before you sign. For a full breakdown by type, see our guide to matchmaking costs.

No. No honest matchmaker can guarantee that you’ll find a partner, fall in love or marry by a certain date. A good matchmaker can widen your search, screen candidates, and support you through every introduction. Be cautious of any firm that promises a relationship on a timeline.

No. You can keep using the apps, stop using them, or hand them off. Some matchmakers, including Sophy Love, offer digital dating, where the team works the apps on your behalf and you approve who you meet.

Sophy Love is best for singles who want a personal search run by an experienced team, with coaching available and never required. Every service is in-house: Executive Matchmaking, digital dating, coaching, or a search that combines them. If your search is defined by one faith community, a niche matchmaker may be a better fit.

Yes. Sophy Love is a boutique luxury matchmaking firm headquartered in San Diego, founded by Sophy Singer, a matchmaker with more than 15 years of experience. The firm offers Executive Matchmaking, digital dating, coaching, or a search that combines them. Many of our clients are 50 and older.

A Better Way to Connect

Here’s the thing I come back to with almost every client over 50. When you meet someone new, it’s tempting to ask right away, “Could this be my person?” That question turns a date into an interview.

Try a different question: “Am I actually curious about this human being?”

Curiosity takes the pressure off. It lets you be present with the person in front of you, and lets them meet the real you. You don’t have to know where it goes yet.

If you’d like someone in your corner while you do that, I’d love to talk.
